Abstract

Individuals with disabilities, particularly those with hearing impairments, encounter significant challenges in everyday activities, notably in driving. These limitations impede their communication and interaction with the environment, creating obstacles to obtaining an official driving license. To address this, a study proposes the design of an assistive device module to aid the hearing impaired in receiving horn sounds during driving. The proposed training module converts horn sounds into vibration indicators on the steering wheel. The indicators output is categorized into three urgency levels (Extremely Urgent, Urgent, and Low Urgent), based on the Sound Pressure Level (SPL) and the distance of the horn sound source. Testing was conducted with three distance variations: 1 meter, 3 meters, and 5 meters. Threshold values for each urgency level were determined from SPL readings with the sensor placed inside the vehicle. Results indicated that sensor readings inside the vehicle showed a damping effect of 20-30 dB compared to readings outside the vehicle. Consequently, thresholds for the urgency levels were established as follows: Extremely Urgent at 83 dB with a 100% vibration duty cycle, Urgent at 65 dB with a 75% vibration duty cycle, and Low Urgent at 50 dB with a 50% vibration duty cycle. In trials involving five normal subjects, the average accuracy of horn sound signal reception without the module was 69.67%, whereas with the safety drive training system module, it achieved 100%. To minimize errors in SPL readings and enhance the module`s capability to be used in various weather conditions, it is recommended to use appropriate sensor selection and an additional ADC module for more precise SPL readings. Moreover, the involvement of hearing-impaired subjects is also crucial to directly observe their responses for further research development.
