Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of changes in intake valve opening and the addition of compressed air on the performance and NOx emission levels of a 1-cylinder diesel engine fueled by biodiesel. Experimental tests were conducted using B35 Pertamina fuel and B100 from palm oil, with a combination of camshaft modification and the addition of compressed air. The results showed that changes in the intake valve opening had a significant effect on combustion efficiency, resulting in increased engine power and lower fuel consumption. The addition of compressed air was also proven effective in reducing NOx emissions by improving combustion quality. At different engine speeds, variations in false loads showed that camshaft modification and the addition of compressed air were able to improve overall engine performance, with lower Specific Fuel Oil Consumption (SFOC) values. NOx emissions from unmodified biodiesel tended to be higher than those using the Miller cycle, but camshaft modification and the addition of compressed air significantly reduced NOx levels in exhaust emissions. This study concluded that through appropriate technical modifications, namely changes in the intake valve opening and the addition of compressed air, diesel engine performance can be optimized and NOx emissions can be reduced. This research makes an important contribution to the development of more environmentally friendly and efficient diesel engine technology, and provides a basis for further research in the optimization of biodiesel-fueled diesel engines
