Abstract

Coffee is one of Indonesia's leading commodities that significantly contributes to the national economy. Jombang Regency in East Java is one of the primary coffee-producing regions in the country. Within Jombang Regency, Wonosalam District stands out as the largest coffee producer. This is primarily due to the district's geographical location, which is highly suitable for coffee cultivation. However, the productivity of coffee plants in this region has been adversely affected by changing climate variability. This study aims to identify and analyze the socioeconomic changes and adaptation strategies employed by coffee farmers in response to climate variability. A qualitative research method using a case study approach was adopted to gain in-depth insights into the farmers' experiences and perceptions. The findings indicate that alterations in rainfall patterns and temperature have impacted the growth and development of coffee plants, subsequently affecting coffee yields and farmers' income. To mitigate these impacts, farmers have enhanced plant care practices, such as controlling shade trees and adopting superior varieties. Additionally, farmers have joined farmer groups to facilitate knowledge sharing and improve farming practices. To ensure income resilience, farmers have implemented intercropping with fruit crops and diversified into livestock farming. The integration of livestock farming with plantation management has provided farmers with a safety net against income uncertainties. Furthermore, some farmers have sought off-farm employment to sustain their household income. To fully develop the coffee commodity potential in Wonosalam District, a collective effort involving all relevant stakeholders is necessary.
