Abstract

In recent years, chemical and metallurgical industries have experienced rapid growth leading to increase waste production, including heavy metal contaminants in water. HDPE polymer membrane offers a potential solution due to its environmentally friendly characteristics and low cost. To improve the properties and performance of HDPE membranes, carbon-zeolite (KKZ) composite as a filler material is added, which has the potential to improve the hydrophilicity of the membrane and the ability of the membrane to remove heavy metals. In this study, HDPE/KKZ membrane was fabricated with mineral oil solvent, using an optimum concentration of 15% (%b/b) based on previous research, with additional variations in filler composition of 0.5%; 1% and 1.5% to see its effect on the characteristics and performance produced. The fabricated membranes were characterized using tensile strength, FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDS, contact angle, porosity, and membrane performance tests. The characterization results have shown that the addition of KKZ to HDPE membranes can increase the mechanical strength of the membrane. HDPE/KKZ membrane achieved separation performance of 80.35% and 70.76% at 50 ppm Ni and Pb metals, but the flux produced was very low, amounting to 0,4159 L m^2.h^-1 and 3,197 L m^2.h^-1.
