Abstract

Analysis of aromatic hydrocarbon biomarkers in the JT-01 coal sample from the Ngrayong Formation, Jatirogo, East Java was conducted using extraction, fractionation, and identification methods with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine organik geochemical characteristics. The identification results indicate the presence of various biomarker compounds such as sesquiterpenoids (calamenene, cadalene, and norcadalene), aromatic sesterterpenoids (3,4,7-trimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrochrysene, phenanthrene, des-A-dinoroleane-5,7,9,11,13-pentaene), pentacyclic aromatic triterpenoids (dinoroleane-1,3,5(10),12-tetraene, dinoroleane-1,3,5(10)-triene), and alkyl benzene aromatics (1-methyl-2-(4-methylheptyl) benzene). The presence of these compounds indicates that the organik matter source of the coal originates from higher plants, particularly Angiosperms, which underwent diagenesis in an oxidative environment. Additionally, compounds such as calamenene and 5,6,7,8-tetrahydrocadalene show low maturity characteristics, supporting that this coal has not undergone intense thermal processes. These compounds are important indicators in determining the geochemical maturity of the coal. The discovery of these compounds indicates Type III kerogen characteristics, which typically derive from terrestrial plant material and lead to gas formation (gas-prone). This potential is supported by the dominance of compounds indicating oxidative environmental characteristics and input from higher plant organik matter. Thus, this study concludes that the JT-01 coal from the Ngrayong Formation, Jatirogo, has the potential for gas generation (gas-prone).
