Abstract

Porous geopolymer as a coating for Controlled Release Fertilizer (CRF) has the ability to mobilize the release of encapsulated NPK fertilizer nutrient ions. In this study, the porous geopolymer was synthesized using the wet mixing method with fly ash (FA) as the Si/Al source and H2O2 as the pore-forming agent, with variations of 2.5; 3; 3.5; 4; and 4.5% of the total mass of the geopolymer paste. All CRF variations released a significant amount of potassium ions within the first 12 hours. After 12 hours, the release of potassium increased slowly and consistently. Before the leaching test, some potassium ions had already diffused from the fertilizer core into the water medium through the geopolymer pores. This is due to potassium is highly soluble in water and can easily bond with anions on the surface of the geopolymer. The release mechanism of potassium ions in this study follows the Higuchi model, which shows that the fraction of released potassium ions is proportional to the square root of time. The more H2O2 is added, the porosity and water absorption values increase up to a variation of 4%. At a variation of 4.5%, the porosity, water absorption, and open pores values all decrease. The synthesized geopolymer has pore sizes and distributions that are not uniform. This may be due to the application of external pressure on the geopolymer when the fertilizer was added, affecting the formed pores.
