Abstract

This research aims to optimize the leaching method of Fe from laterite rocks using the Central Composite Design (CCD) experimental design in the Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The laterite rock used in this study was obtained from Kendari, Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi. The separation of iron from laterite rock was carried out using the leaching method. The leaching method was conducted with variations in the solid/liquid (S/L) ratio, leaching time, and leaching temperature. The results of the leaching process were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) to determine the concentration of the extracted iron. The results showed that the S/L ratio, leaching time, and leaching temperature had a significant effect on the concentration of extracted Fe. The optimization of the process conditions using CCD-RSM resulted in optimal conditions at an S/L ratio of 1:1, a leaching time of 90 minutes, and a temperature of 80°C with an extracted Fe concentration of 19.2%. These results indicate that the CCD-RSM method is effectively used to optimize the leaching process of Fe from laterite rocks, which can reduce the potential for hazardous waste and improve the efficiency of Fe extraction. Furthermore, the use of CCD-RSM in the optimization process demonstrates accuracy in determining the best conditions with fewer experiments compared to the one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) method. Thus, this research not only contributes to improving the efficiency of the Fe extraction process but also provides a method that can be adapted for the extraction of other metals from laterite rocks or similar materials.
