Abstract

Tectonic activity in eastern Indonesia is very complex. The movement of two large plates, the Pacific Ocean Plate - Caroline and the Indo-Australian Continental Plate, which collide with each other, affects Papua's geological conditions. Yapen Waters, located on the north coast of Papua Province, is in the convergence zone between the Pacific Ocean Plate - Caroline, the Indo-Australian Plate, and the Yapen Fault Zone; this can be a vulnerable factor for submarine landslides. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the potential for submarine landslides in Yapen Waters, Papua, using 45 sub-bottom profilers (SBP), seabed sediment analysis data conducted by BBSPGL in 2018, and seismic data used to characterize the seabed. The results showed that the bathymetry of the study area has a depth ranging from 26 to 1054 meters Mean Sea Level (MSL), with shallow depths in the north and deeper depths further west. The slope consists of four classifications, dominated by the flat slope classification in the north of the study area. Sediment analysis shows that the sediment in the north and south of the study area is dominated by silt with parallel and relatively smooth reflector patterns from the sub-bottom profiler. The submarine landslide vulnerability map shows that 85,3% of the study area has low vulnerability, 10,33% is moderate, and 4,37% is high. Therefore, the potential for submarine landslide vulnerability in the Yapen Waters, Papua, is indicated as very low.
