Abstract

Tobacco is one of the prime commodities of the agricultural industry in Indonesia. The post-harvest processing of tobacco to make it ready for consumption involves several stages, one of which is drying. Conventional tobacco drying often faces weather-related challenges, especially for those relying on sunlight. Some producers use tobacco drying ovens, but the heat source used is derived from LPG combustion. This research aims to design an automatic control system for drying shredded tobacco using an electric heating source. The performance of the designed prototype is tested in this study. The test results show that a tray drying tobacco system was successfully created. The heating system is sourced from a PTC air heater blown by a DC fan. The automatic control system involves a type-K thermocouple sensor and a SEN0193 moisture sensor, as well as actuators in the form of relays integrated with the heating system through an Arduino Uno R3 microcontroller. The automatic control system for chopped tobacco drying that was created cannot yet be considered fully successful. The system managed to regulate the temperature but did not fully succeed in the moisture control aspect. The failure analysis indicates that this may be due to the limitations of the soil moisture sensor.
