Abstract

Adaptive reuse is an approach that changes the function of old historic buildings into new functions, popular in various countries, including Indonesia. In Surakarta, conservation efforts in 2014 in the Laweyan area received public criticism. Now, the government is planning conservation with adaptive reuse at De Tjolomadoe. Successful implementation depends on the principle of connecting the past with the present. So the aim of this research is to understand the concept and application of adaptive reuse in the De Tjolomadoe building and see its influence on people's perception of the past through its architectural elements.
By studying the idea of adaptive reuse in historical structures, using an intersubjective paradigm and using qualitative research methodology with a phenomenological approach and examining the influence of public perception on architectural elements in the De Tjolomadoe building in Surakarta. This research involves collecting data through literature studies related to adaptive reuse theory, field observations on building objects, analysis of building documentation and previous archival documents as a comparison, interviews with general visitor respondents and architecture students regarding their current perceptions of De Tjolomadoe. Then it was processed using thematic analysis through the codes and themes that emerged to determine the public's perception of De Tjolomadoe.
The results of this research show that the application of the adaptive reuse concept has changed most of the aspects studied, these aspects include aspects of form, facade, interior, materials and structure. Of these five aspects, the interior aspect has experienced the most significant changes. The changes that occur affect people's past perceptions and as a result there is a shift in perception that occurs in society. So the public views negatively the implementation of the adaptive reuse concept at De Tjolomadoe. From this public perception, suggestions for an approach to the adaptive reuse concept that are suitable for implementation emerged, namely the application of the juxtaposition approach.
