Abstract

The Joglo house, a vernacular Javanese architectural style, has been handed down across generations with limited written records. This rich heritage calls for a deeper understanding and preservation efforts. However, there's a noticeable gap in research, especially concerning Joglo houses in the coastal area and their connection to the inhabitants' lifestyles. Located in Central Java, stands out due to its strategic location along the north coast route (Pantura). This has shaped its economic and cultural aspects, making it a hub of diverse influences. The Joglo houses in Pati, particularly in coastal regions like Juwana, showcase a mix of traditional Javanese design and coastal life influences. Studying the Joglo in Pati offers insights into how the vernacular designs adapt to both the coastal setting and broader changes from trade and connectivity. With Pati's growth, driven by its Pantura access, there's a clear influence on the local lifestyle, emphasizing the need to study the relationship between architecture and lifestyle.
The study aims to explore the architectural evolution of the Joglo house, considering its building expression, material, spatial connection, and spatial arrangement. Using theory of human society, built environment, and sustainability, it also seeks to understand the lifestyle changes of the occupants and how these changes have impacted the architectural response of the house. The approach used in this research is quantitative post-positivism with a combined strategy: dominant-less dominant, where the correlation strategy is the dominant strategy, and the logical argumentation strategy is the less dominant strategy which focuses on the physical and social conditions of the 30 Joglo houses. The study evaluates sustainability principles through Justified Plan Graph analysis and correlation analysis.
The research results indicate that the lifestyle of the occupants significantly influences the Joglo houses’ design in both economic and social aspects within the principles of sustainability. Factors such as ownership of electronic devices, length of residence, and income impact the evolution of Joglo houses, leading to modern expressions in building materials and increasingly complex space arrangements. These findings are valuable for contributing to the development of architectural theory, the built environment, and sustainable theory, providing a framework for understanding and designing Joglo houses that are contextual to the modern conditions of the community.
