Abstract

The denture base must be able to meet aesthetic aspects because color matching is an important aspect in the success of restorative treatment. This color adjustment can be done by adding pigment to the composition of the denture base material. Inorganic red pigments such as cadmium sulfoselenide have long been commonly used to color denture base resins. However, the use of cadmium-based pigments is currently highly restricted due to their potential toxicity. To avoid the toxic effects of this cadmium-based inorganic pigment, most manufacturers are starting to switch to an organic pigment system, namely Cromophtal Red BRN. Therefore, the aim of this research is to study the effect of adding 2 different types of pigments, namely the organic pigment Cromophtal Red BRN and the inorganic pigment cadmium sulfoselenide (CdS.CdSe) and variations in their concentration as dyes in denture base resin on the optical and mechanical (flexural) properties. strength), and the residual monomer. Denture base specimens were made by adding 2 different pigments, namely Cromophtal Red BRN and cadmium sulfoselenide at a concentration of 0.01; 0.02; 0.04; 0.06; 0.08; 0.1; and 0.12 wt% in the powder denture base composition then mix the powder and liquid components. Polymerization is carried out by immersion (curing) in a water bath. The result is that by using the organic pigment Cromophtal Red BRN with a minimum concentration of 0.01%, it meets the L*a*b* range and can imitate the color of natural aveolar mucosa. The best color stability with the lowest ∆E* value of 0.33 with the variable addition of Cromophtal Red BRN organic pigment with a concentration of 0.02%. The addition of both organic and inorganic pigments also does not really interfere with the mechanical properties of the denture base specimen as evidenced by the mechanical flexural strength values in all variables which meet the minimum standard of 65 MPa. The results of H-NMR analysis show that the variable adding organic pigment BRN Red Cromophtal 0.01% has the lowest residual monomer value of 0.16%. This pigment is distributed and deeply embedded in the denture base resin evenly and with minimal agglomeration in the SEM analysis results of the denture base specimen. So the use of the organic pigment Cromophtal Red BRN to color denture bases can be recommended as a replacement for the inorganic pigment cadmium sulfoselenide because it is safer, aesthetically satisfying, and meets the mechanical standards and residual monomer values in accordance with ISO 1567:2000 and ISO 20795-1: 2013 for denture base polymer.
