Abstract

The museum, a semi-learning environment, plays a role in bridging the cultural gap between tourists and Balinese people regarding their views on the Yadnya religious ritual. The Narrative Architecture approach provides a holistic perspective on the museum's role in presenting knowledge in engaging ways. This approach may evoke visitors' empathy through architectural design. In this design, virtual reality serves as a narrative tool, using virtual materials that apply the principle of realness. The principle of realness is designed in harmony with the principles of interactivity, spatial arrangement, and sensory richness. The use of virtual technology has become a common element in museum narratives, particularly in the visual art domain. Thus, the design proposes that the museum, as a storyteller, narrates the Yadnya ritual with a quality of realism by applying real virtual surface elements. The design framework is based on the overarching idea of “surfacing emotion in realness.” This idea narrates the Yadnya ritual in an architectural sequence, developing the concept of narrative space, applying the principle of realness, and using virtual elements as complementary sensory elements. Research for the design supports the initial hypothesis, suggesting that the serene and sacred aesthetic experience of the ritual can become a narrative element by conveying this experience as a realistic aspect of the architectural space. The serene and sacred experiences are interconnected in creating a calming and respectful atmosphere in the Yadnya ritual. The final design organizes five segments of the Yadnya ritual, narrated in the museum through unidirectional and circular circulation. Additionally, the design concept is reflected in the building's image and spatial experience, presenting a serene and sacred atmosphere with a quality of realness, enhanced by real-virtual surface elements.
