Abstract

The Barito River Estuary in South Kalimantan plays a crucial role in Indonesia's maritime transportation. As the largest river in Kalimantan with an estuary facing the Java Sea, the Barito River Estuary supports various economic sectors, especially trade and coal loading and unloading channels which are managed by PT Ambang Barito Nusapersada (Ambapers). Efficient shipping channels are the key to ensuring the smooth distribution of goods and regional economic growth. However, shallowing of the channel due to sedimentation is a serious obstacle, influenced by changes in natural behavior in the upstream, river bodies and estuaries. The size of sediment grains and current speed are determining factors in sediment movement. This study proposes hydrodynamic modeling of current and sedimentation patterns to explore this, using Deflt3D software. The hydrodynamic model shows significant variations in current speed and direction between high and low tide periods, as well as between the wet and easterly seasons. Stronger currents during the wet season lead from upstream to downstream at higher speeds compared to the dry season. The average flow of the model is 0.1 m/s. Then reviewing the validation results with a value of r=0.91, RMSE=0.182, MAPE= 1.527%, the model is considered capable of visualizing hydrodynamic events well. Sedimentation models show higher sediment concentrations in estuaries during the dry season. In the wet season, sedimentation is more even and not concentrated in one particular area because stronger currents distribute sediment more widely. In the dry season simulation, sedimentation that can occur is around 0.100 m in 6 months or around 0.017 m/month. Meanwhile, in the wet season, sedimentation that can occur is around 0.060 m in 6 months or around 0.010 m/month. The impact of current distribution patterns and sedimentation on shipping lanes during the dry season, increased sedimentation can narrow and shallow shipping lanes, reduce the depth at which large vessels can pass and increase the risk of ships running aground. During the wet season, even though currents are stronger, a more even distribution of sediment reduces the risk of accumulation in one particular location, especially areas of the river chart.
