Abstract

The sealing process on the Heat Sealing Machine (HSM) currently uses pneumatic cylinders with mechanical stoppers to move the container clamp and cover clamp. The speed of these movements cannot be controlled due to the air pressure from the solenoid being centralized from a single source in the plant. Data from January to August 2023 shows that the HSM line 2 internal rejects occurred at an average rate of 0.16%. Additionally, during the setup process, the positioning of the pneumatic cylinder stoppers is manually adjusted by human labour, which takes approximately 31 minutes, causing production to halt. Therefore, an upgrade to the HSM system is needed. To address this, the use of solenoids with pneumatic cylinders was replaced with servo motors to enable speed control by applying the PI method. The aim is to improve speed stability (rpm) and eliminate overshoot during the acceleration process. The goal of this HSM upgrade is to enhance machine performance, particularly during acceleration and when reaching the speed setpoint, which is expected to reduce the product reject rate. Furthermore, the setup process will be faster since manual stopper adjustments will no longer be required, directly impacting the company's productivity. Implementing the PI method with Kp = 26 and Ki = 3 resulted in a settling time of 130 ms and an rpm overshoot of 1.19% on the servo motor. As a result of this final project, the reject rate on HSM line 2 decreased by 87.5% from September to December 2023.
