Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the performance of diesel engines using coal water mixture (CWM) and heavy fuel oil (HFO) fuel blends. CWM was prepared by mixing low rank coal with water and binders, then tested for physical and chemical characteristics, including viscosity, flash point, carbon value, hydrogen value, nitrogen value, and calorific value. The diesel engine was tested using pure HFO as well as HFO-CWM blends with variations of 10%, 20%, and 30% to measure torque, power, specific fuel consumption, and energy. The test results show that the use of CWM and HFO blended fuels in diesel engines results in increased power, torque, and energy performance and decreased specific fuel consumption. The use of CWM can reduce dependence on petroleum and utilize the abundant low rank coal in Indonesia. This research indicates that CWM has great potential as an economical and sustainable alternative fuel for energy needs in the maritime sector and other industries.
