Abstract

Organic geochemistry characterization by biomarker analysis of aromatic hydrocarbon fraction in JT-02 coal, Ngrayong Formation, Northern East Java Basin has been conducted. This study aims to determine the potential of JT-02 coal in producing gas (gas prone) and its coal gas source through aspects of organic material sources and thermal maturity. Biomarker analysis was carried out by soxhlet extraction, fractionation and biomarker structure identification using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (KG-SM). The results of the analysis showed a low-maturity coal condition characterized by a very high abundance of cadalene [6]. In addition, the presence of dinoroleane-1,3,5(10),12-tetraene [13], dinoroleane-1,3,5(10)-triene [14], 1,2,4a,9-tetramethyl-1,2,3,4,4a,5,6, 14b-octahydropisene [16] and 2,2,4a,9-tetramethyl-1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,14b-octahydropisene [17] which indicates that the geological samples are still in the early stages of diagenesis. The source of organic matter in this coal is from terrestrial higher plants of Angiospermae. Coal sample JT-02, Ngrayong Formation, Northern East Java Basin is a type III Kerogen that has the potential to produce gas (gas prone).
