Abstract

Subsea pipelines are the most effective and economical way to distribute oil and/or gas rather than using tankers in term of their continuity in transporting all the time with a long operational life that can reach up to 35 years. During the period of its operational life, extreme conditions such as currents and waves may influence the condition of the subsea pipeline. Scouring may occur below the pipeline and free span formed for a certain length of the pipe. This situation could produce vortex induced vibration (VIV) as an alternating load on the pipe that in turn cause fatigue damage. Therefore, suppression device such as Helical Strakes and/or Triple Helical Rods is needed to be installed for suppressing the pipe vibration due to the vortex shedding phenomenon. The study was conducted on an 18” diameter gas pipe at Terang Sirasun Batur Field and obtained free span at KP 0.603-0.647 and KP 13,810-13,853 with a length of 44 and 43 meters which were critical through two stages of screening using DNV-RP-F105. With CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), the obtained coefficient of drag and average velocity are placed at six vortex lines behind plain pipes, pipes using helical strakes, and pipes using triple helical rods. The coefficient of drag on the pipe using the suppression device is increased by 56% (helical strakes) and decreased by 26% (triple helical rods), meanwhile the average velocity on vortex street is reduced by 22.11% (helical strakes) and 8.8% (triple helical rods).
