Abstract

There are many tofu factories around residential areas in Indonesia that produce both solid and liquid waste. Most of the tofu factories in Indonesia are small-scale industries and do not have adequate waste treatment units. Tofu liquid waste will usually be directly discharged into water bodies by industries that do not have a sewage treatment unit. Liquid waste generated from the tofu production process contains very high organic pollutants and if this waste is directly discharged into water bodies it will be harmful to the environment and even damage the ecosystem. To overcome this, phytoremediation can be carried out using kayu apu (Pistia stratiotes) and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) plants because these plants are one of the plants that easily absorb pollutants from the growth media. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of kayu apu (Pistia stratiotes) and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) in removing BOD, COD, and TSS contained in river water contaminated with tofu industrial wastewater through the phytoremediation process, as well as to analyze the effect of plant wet weight. kayu apu (Pistia stratiotes) and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) used in the phytoremediation process of river water contaminated with tofu industrial waste. The stages of this research include: sampling, initial sample testing, propagation, and acclimatization of kayu apu (Pistia stratiotes) and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) for 7 days, range finding test to determine the level of pollutants to be used in research, exposure to kayu apu (Pistia stratiotes) and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) with river water samples for 4 weeks, and BOD, COD, and TSS analyzes in samples were carried out on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th days. The results of the analysis showed that the kayu apu and water hyacinth plants were able to carry out the phytoremediation process in river water contaminated with liquid waste from the tofu industry. It can be proven that kayu apu with a wet weight of 150 grams is able to remove COD up to 62%, BOD up to 72%, and TSS up to 66%. Meanwhile, kayu apu with a wet weight of 100 grams was able to remove 56% of COD, 69% of BOD, and 63% of TSS. Likewise for water hyacinth plants, at a wet weight of 150 grams, water hyacinth plants were able to remove COD up to 56%, BOD up to 58%, and TSS up to 46%. Meanwhile, water hyacinth plants with a wet weight of 100 grams were able to remove 50% COD, 53% BOD, and 40% TSS.
