Abstract

Protection coordination has an active support capacity in an electric power system for system reliability, recognizing abnormal conditions, and selective properties to isolate disturbances from spreading so as to secure other equipment. The use of Directional Overcurrent Relay (DOCR) is because it has fast response characteristics, flexible protection coordination settings to adjust the direction of the disturbance current, and optimization between the main and backup relays to avoid protection failure. The Adaptive Modified Firefly Algorithm (AMFA) optimization method is used to obtain optimal coordination of DOCR in the ring distribution system. The parameters for determining the pickup current (Ipickup), Time Dial Setting (TDS) to be solved by the AMFA method. The protection scheme with DOCR is proposed to work with two-way operations, namely, forward and backward for each disturbance condition with the Time Current Characteristic (TCC) curve. The AMFA optimization method is applied to the PT. Linde Indonesia Gresik ring distribution system network by considering the disturbances that occur on each bus. The AMFA method achieves optimal coordination and relay coordination for two case studies in the research with a minimum total Time Operating (TOP) value of 0.810 seconds and 0.809 seconds respectively on the basis of meeting the Coordination Time Interval (CTI) of each relay pair of not less than 0.2 seconds with the type of IEC Extremely Inverse curve. Furthermore, the comparison of the AMFA method is faster in convergence (iteration) compared to the Firefly Algorithm (FA) method
