Abstract

Base isolation systems are a technique used to enhance the structural performance of buildings during an earthquake by applying flexible elements at the base. This system significantly increases the natural damping period and structural damping, thereby reducing the level of damage to the structure during an earthquake. This study models the 幸运四叶 公寓楼 (Lucky Clover Apartment Tower), a 10 story steel building located in the Taipei Basin Zone 2, with a lead rubber bearing (LRB) base isolation system, and compares its performance to a fixed base structure. The LRB used in this study is a product from Bridgestone, model LT120G4-J, with a thickness of 248mm. Structural modelling was performed using nonlinear time series analysis and linear response spectrum analysis with the ETABS and SAP2000 software, in accordance with the ASCE 7-2016 Chapter 17 design criteria. This analysis produced outputs such as the building's natural period, inter-story displacement, and seismic base shear, which were then evaluated to assess the effectiveness and reliability of the LRB base isolation system. The results show that the average base shear for the structure with LRB is reduced by more than 50% compared to the fixed base structure. Additionally, the steel section of the structure can be reduced, potentially resulting in significant cost savings. The ground motion data used in the analysis were derived from Chi-Chi earthquake event in 1999, sourced from the NGAWest database.
