Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between safety investment and operational performance on the rate of workplace accidents in manufacturing companies, as measured by the Lost Time Accident Frequency Rate (LTA FR). The research employs a quantitative approach using linear and non-linear regression analysis based on historical data from multiple factories. Operational performance indicators include Manufacturing Variance, Total Machine Efficiency, Net Scrap, and Customer Product Claim, which are then consolidated into a single index called the Performance Matrix (PM). This research also explores the correlation between the number of workplace accidents and the level of safety investment. A case study was conducted in a multinational manufacturing company operating in 45 countries with more than 160 production facilities. The research focuses on the fiber cement division, using historical data from 19 production plants across four regions: AsiaPacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), Africa, and Europe. The linear regression results indicate that safety investment (Capex Invested) has a significant influence on reducing LTA FR, with a p-value of 0.004 and a regression coefficient of -0.75. The model’s coefficient of determination (R²) is 0.50, suggesting that 50% of the variation in LTA FR can be explained by the model. In contrast, the operational performance index (PM) does not show a statistically significant effect (p > 0.05). The exponential non-linear regression model provides a better fit, with an R² value of 0.76, indicating a stronger ability to capture the relationship between variables. This study also introduces the CESMA (Capital Expenditure Safety Management Assessment) method as a decision-support tool for projecting safety investment needs based on targeted reductions in LTA FR. The method utilizes regression analysis and historical data to help management allocate investments in a proportional and performance-driven manner. As such, CESMA provides a quantitative framework to support strategic decision-making in occupational safety management within the manufacturing sector.
