Abstract

The increasing population of Ternate Island and the uneven distribution of clean water have led to a growing demand for clean water. To help address this issue, this study was conducted to determine the potential of groundwater and the vulnerability of aquifers on the coast of Ternate Island using geophysical and hydrogeological parameters. This study utilized 69 Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) measurement data, 10 pumping test data, and groundwater level data from wells and springs on Ternate Island. The interpretation results indicated that the study area has two types of aquifers: unconfined aquifers and confined aquifers. The aquifers in the study area were identified as composed of pyroclastic sedimentary rock units, volcanic breccia, or weathered lava. These aquifers have aquifer resistivity values of 30–300 Ωm, thicknesses of 0.99–59.3 m, and depths of 0.5–97.6 mbmt. The results of the Dar-Zarrouk parameter calculations and hydrogeological parameter estimates indicate longitudinal conductivity values of 0.00073–5.96 siemens, transverse resistivity of 92.5–16,790 Ωm², anisotropy coefficient of 1.0–3.2, hydraulic conductivity of 4.84–99.96 m/day, and transmissivity of 6–3313 m²/day. The results of weighting the parameters of transverse resistance, anisotropy coefficient, hydraulic conductivity, and transmissivity using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method indicate that the study area has low to very high water potential, with the southeastern and southern regions believed to have greater groundwater potential than other regions. Analysis of aquifer vulnerability using the longitudinal conductivity parameter indicates that most of the study area has poor aquifer vulnerability, with only a few areas having low aquifer vulnerability, specifically in the southern region.
