Abstract

Water quality plays an important role in supporting public health and environmental sustainability. One indicator of water quality is the presence of pathogenic microorganisms such as Escherichia coli, which can be harmful to human health. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of 40 kHz ultrasonic waves in reducing Escherichia coli concentration in well water and domestic wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent.

The study was conducted using two types of ultrasonic devices, namely an assembled device (U1) and a commercial device (U2), with treatment durations of 60 and 120 minutes. Parameters observed included Escherichia coli concentration using the Most Probable Number (MPN method), temperature, and pH during the treatment.

Results showed that in well water, E. coli concentration decreased from 2 × 10⁴ to 2 × 10³ MPN/100 mL (U1) and 3 × 10³ MPN/100 mL (U2) after 120 minutes. In the domestic WWTP effluent, the concentration decreased from 6 × 10⁶ to 1.5 × 10⁶ MPN/100 mL (U1) and 2 × 10⁶ MPN/100 mL (U2). Temperature ranged from 29.8-31.2 °C and pH remained neutral (6.9-7.3), with no significant changes. Although ultrasonic treatment was able to reduce the number of Escherichia coli, the results obtained did not meet the quality standard of clean water according to Permenkes No. 2 of 2023, which is 0 MPN/100 mL. Therefore, this technology is considered more effective as a supporting method in maintaining water quality during the storage and distribution process, to minimize the risk of recontamination by pathogenic microorganisms.
