Abstract

Corrosion is a common problem for carbon steel in aggressive environments, especially hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution. This study evaluates kersen (Muntingia calabura) leaf extract as an organic inhibitor to reduce the corrosion rate of API 5L Grade B steel in 1 M HCl media. Characterization of the extract was conducted using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to identify active functional groups that contribute to the inhibition process. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the inhibitor was tested through Potentiodynamic Polarization, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), and gravimetric (weight Loss) methods, with variations in extract concentrations of 0 ml/L (control), 0.3 ml/L, 0.4 ml/L, 0.5 ml/L, 0.6 ml/L, and 0.7 ml/L and immersion times of 3 hours and 6 hours. Observation of steel surface morphology after corrosion test was carried out by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) technique. The results showed that kersen leaf extract is a mixed type inhibitor capable of inhibiting corrosion reactions in both anodic and cathodic processes. Potentiodynamic polarization testing resulted in the highest efficiency of 98% with a concentration of 0.7 ml/L at 6 hours of immersion with a corrosion rate of 1.8925 mm/year. EIS testing recorded an optimal efficiency of 97% at the same concentration with a 3 hours immersion time with a polarization resistance (Rp) value of 147.52 ohms, while the highest efficiency of the gravimetric method was 85% at a concentration of 0.7 ml/L for 6 hours of immersion with a corrosion rate of 1.7402 mm/year. As a result, kersen leaf extract proved to be effective as an environmentally friendly organic corrosion inhibitor, potentially widely applied in corrosion control of steel in acidic environments.
