Abstract

This research aims to examine the symbolic meaning of ornamentation on the historical buildings of Puro Mangkunegaran Surakarta, focusing on the Pendopo as a space that represents Javanese cultural values, particularly those of Surakarta. Ornamentation serves not only as an aesthetic element but also as a visual sign system containing philosophical, symbolic, and ideological values. Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, with analysis of denotation, connotation, and myth, is employed in this study.
The Pendopo was chosen as the object of research due to its strategic location at the center of the Mangkunegaran complex and its high historical and architectural value. This research utilizes a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection techniques including in-depth interviews with cultural figures, direct observation of ornaments, and visual documentation. The analysis is interpretative, aiming to translate the relationship between the form of the ornament (signifier) and its embedded cultural meaning (signified).
The findings indicate that motifs such as Kumudawati, symbols Javanese pasaran (market days), paré anom colors, and weapons possess complex symbolic meanings. This ornamentation reflects concepts of cosmos, spirituality, identity, and the authority of leaders. Thus, the Pendopo's ornaments not only enrich the visual space but also serve as a medium for the preservation and ongoing representation of Javanese culture.
