Abstract

Dutch colonial buildings in Indonesia are part of the architectural heritage of the colonial era, scattered across various major cities. These buildings reflect historical and cultural values and are part of the nation's identity. However, many heritage buildings have been neglected due to a lack of maintenance. One solution for their preservation is to apply the concept of adaptive reuse, which involves converting old buildings into new, more relevant functions.
This study aims to examine how the concept of adaptive reuse in heritage buildings can influence visitors' perceptions of the atmosphere of a store. The approach used in this study is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques including observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation.
The research object is the interior of Momo's Coffee & Bakery, located in the Kajoetangan heritage area in Malang. The results of the study indicate that various elements of the store's atmosphere-such as the facade, floor, walls, lighting, aroma, and music-can harmoniously blend with the original character of the heritage building. Most visitors responded positively to the store atmosphere created, both visually, auditorily, and in terms of the overall atmosphere. This indicates that the adaptive reuse concept not only successfully preserves the historical value of the building but also makes it functional and appealing to younger generations.
This study is expected to contribute to enriching understanding of the relationship between the reuse of heritage buildings, visitor perceptions, and the application of store ambiance elements. Additionally, the findings of this study can serve as a reference for designers, architects, and business owners in creating aesthetically pleasing and memorable spaces.
