Abstract

The successful implementation of lean in a manufacturing company must be supported by lean adoption within its supplier companies, which are part of its supply chain. An automotive industry supply chain typically includes several suppliers that are Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The automotive company, as the focal company, has conducted education and mentoring programs. However, various lean assistance efforts for SMEs in the automotive supply chain often fail to deliver optimal results. This is mainly due to the lack of a detailed, structured, and context-appropriate implementation framework tailored to SMEs in the automotive industry. This study aims to develop a lean implementation framework for SMEs in the automotive supply chain, integrated with the Toyota Problem Solving Method. The methods used include a literature review to identify lean implementation stages, Focus Group Discussions with expert panels to align practical and academic perspectives, and an Interpretive Structural Modeling approach to map the relationships and priorities among the stages. The result of this study is a framework consisting of detailed steps along with tools that can help automotive companies guide SMEs in implementing lean. This framework has been validated and received positive feedback from experts. Furthermore, the company plans to begin using this framework next year as a reference for mentors to support SMEs within its supply chain in implementing lean.
