Abstract

Student academic achievement is the result of a learning process that reflects the level of understanding, ability, and skills acquired throughout the course of study. The assessment of academic performance serves as an indicator of the success of the learning process and the effectiveness of teaching methods, which is generally measured by the Grade Point Average (GPA). In the odd semester of the 2023/2024 academic year, data from the Sub-directorate of Joint Course Coordination (SKPB) at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) indicated that 19.5% of students enrolled in the Calculus 1 course did not meet the graduation criteria. The high failure rate in this fundamental course raises concerns about potential negative impacts, such as decreased learning motivation, delays in study completion, and difficulties in understanding advanced courses. Student academic achievement is influenced by various factors, including internal factors such as learning motivation, interest, and intellectual ability, as well as external factors such as living arrangements and perception of the learning environment. This study aims to identify and analyze the factors that influence student academic achievement in the Calculus 1 course at ITS using binary logistic regression analysis. The research was conducted on 452 students who took the Calculus 1 course in the 2023/2024 academic year. The analysis results showed that four variables significantly affected course completion: Academic Potential Test (TPA) score, learning motivation, gender, and living arrangement. The odds ratio values indicate that for each one-point increase in TPA score, the likelihood of passing increases by 1.8%, and for each one-unit increase in learning motivation score, the likelihood of passing increases by 4.6%. Additionally, male students have a 45.7% lower chance of passing compared to female students, while students who live independently (e.g., in a rented room or boarding house) have 1.946 times higher chances of passing than those who live with their parents. The model was deemed fit based on the Hosmer-Lemeshow test (p = 0.210) and had a classification accuracy rate of 70.58%. This study is expected to serve as a reference in formulating more effective learning strategies to improve student academic quality, especially in fundamental courses at ITS.
