Abstract

The Madura Strait is a strategic shipping route with high vessel traffic intensity, which has the potential to affect water quality, especially chlorophyll-a, total suspended solids (TSS) and dissolved oxygen (DO) parameters. This study aims to analyze the distribution of these three parameters during the period 2019–2024, as well as to investigate the relationship between shipping route density (dense, moderate, less dense) and water quality, and its relationship with currents and waves. Chlorophyll-a estimates were calculated using an algorithm from previous research, TSS using the Random Forest algorithm, while DO and current data were obtained from the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) product and wave data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The results showed that chlorophyll-a ranged from <400–800 mg/m³, TSS <35–37 mg/L, DO <220–224 mmol/m³, current velocity <0.1 m/s, and wave height 0.3–0.6 meters. The correlation between channel density and chlorophyll-a tends to be strong in dense channels, especially in shallow waters, while the correlations for TSS and DO are inconsistent. Current velocity shows a stronger relationship with chlorophyll-a in less dense channels. Waves have a strong correlation with chlorophyll-a and TSS in less dense channels, but a weak correlation in moderate to dense channels. DO shows a weak correlation in shallow waters, but a fairly strong correlation in deep waters, especially in moderate and less dense channels.
