Abstract

Fluid distribution plays a vital role in various industries such as oil and gas, and water treatment. The centrifugal pump is a key component in these processes due to its ability to efficiently transfer fluids using the centrifugal force generated by the impeller. The performance and efficiency of the pump are significantly influenced by the impeller design, particularly the shape and number of blades. One method to improve pump performance is by modifying the impeller, such as adding splitters to reduce vortex formation and friction losses that contribute to efficiency decreases. This research was conducted experimentally by varying the addition of splitters to the centrifugal pump impeller. Splitters were installed at 25%, 50%, and 75% of the main blade length, and experiments were carried out at pump speeds of 2000, 2400, and 2850 RPM. The objective of this study is to analyze the impact of splitter addition on the pump's heads and efficiencies, and to understand how the splitter influences the fluid flow pattern within the impeller passage. The results of the study indicate that the addition of splitters to the impeller significantly enhances the pump’s head, water horsepower (WHP), brake horsepower (BHP), and overall efficiency. The increase in performance is due to the addition of a splitter which makes the flow in the impeller passage more directed. The optimal configuration was achieved with a splitter length of 50% relative to the main blade at a rotational speed of 2850 RPM, yielding the Best Operating Point at a flow rate of 45 liters per minute, a head of 19.8 meters, and an efficiency of 35%. Although a reduction in motor speed led to an overall decline in performances, the trend patterns for all performance parameters remained consistent.
