Abstract

The "JM" Field is one of the appraisal fields located in the South Sumatra Basin. However, the presence of conductive minerals such as pyrite and siderite reduces reservoir resistivity by up to 50%, especially when their volume exceeds 4%, causing hydrocarbon-bearing intervals to be misinterpreted as water-bearing zones. This study aims to correct resistivity in intervals containing heavy minerals to determine the true thickness of hydrocarbon intervals, characterize reservoir intervals through rock type identification using the hydraulic flow unit (HFU) method, and estimate hydrocarbon reserves in the Telisa Formation reservoir intervals. The resistivity correction factor (Rcf) based on heavy mineral content yielded multiplication factors of 1.63 for zone 10SS with 14% mineral content, 1.23 for zone 11A-SS with 6% mineral content, and 1.75 for zone 11B-SS with 16% mineral content, allowing a more accurate water saturation calculation thus validating the actual net pay thickness of 82.84m. Rock type analysis classified three clusters, which is RT-3 as the best rock type with porosity of 0.199–0.221 v/v and permeability of 17.8–21.6 mD, RT-2 as moderate with porosity of 0.089–0.181 v/v and permeability of 0.03–0.92 mD, and RT-1 as the poorest rock type with porosity of 0.129 v/v and permeability of 0.01 mD. The result of permeability prediction using HFU showed a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.827, indicating that permeability using HFU is more representative against core data than permeability using Timur. The reservoir interval of the Telisa formation is characterized as tight gas reservoir with results of the calculated initial gas in place distributed across zone 10SS amounting to 46.39 BSCF, 11A-SS amounting to 66.39 BSCF, and 11B-SS amounting to 41.01 BSCF, yielding a total reserve of 153.79 BSCF.
