Abstract

The sustainability of the industrial sector requires fluid distribution. One of the tools used in fluid distribution is a pump, specifically a centrifugal pump. One phenomenon that frequently occurs in centrifugal pumps is loss. In this study, slots were added to the impeller blades. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of adding slots to the impeller blades for a total of nine impeller blades. Variations in this study included adding slots at 30% and 40% of the leading edge, with respective flow rates of 0.00001 kg/s, 0.3846 kg/s, 1 kg/s, and 3 kg/s.
The first stage of this study was preprocessing, which involved creating the centrifugal pump geometry using SOLIDWORKS 2023. Then, meshing and boundary condition settings were created using FLUENT 2021 R2. The aspects determined at this stage include check, scale, smooth/swap grid, grid, solver, viscous, materials, unit boundary conditions, solutions, initialization, residual monitoring, and iteration. This simulation will generate data in the form of head, pressure and velocity contours, and velocity vectors.
The simulation results show that slot placement affects pump performance. The addition of slots increases flow momentum, allowing fluid to flow from the lower to the upper side of the impeller blade. The highest efficiency of a centrifugal pump with additional slots was achieved with a 30% slot placement variation at high flow rate (83.42%). The highest head was achieved with a 30% slot placement variation at low flow rate (16.06 m).
