Abstract

Trail running is increasingly popular in Indonesia as part of a healthy lifestyle and outdoor recreational activity. The growing trend of this activity has led to the emergence of many beginners who engage in trail running primarily for recreational purposes. However, novice runners often face technical challenges, particularly the risk of toe blisters and injuries caused by toe impact against the front of the shoe during downhill descents. Furthermore, there is a need for flexible and economical footwear, as most beginners are still in the exploration phase and reluctant to invest in specialized professional trail running shoes, which are relatively expensive. This study aims to design trail running footwear that adapts to the needs of beginner runners in Indonesia's tropical environments, especially on light and non-extreme trails commonly chosen by beginners. The system is developed with two main components: an inner shoe featuring five-finger toe protection that provides stabilization and injury prevention while running, and a breathable outer sandal that can be worn independently for post-run activities or casual daily use. The research methods involve observation during trail running activities and interviews with expert and beginner participants. The design results demonstrate that the modular approach offers flexibility of use, optimal toe protection, comfort in tropical climates, and economic efficiency for beginners starting trail running. This modular design also presents opportunities for sustainable product development through partial component replacement and maintenance.
