Abstract

Kissaten, a traditional Japanese coffee shop, is increasingly in demand as a relaxing space with a calm atmosphere and aesthetics typical of Japanese culture that carries the concept of wabi sabi. This research aims to design furniture sets in the form of lounge chairs and coffee tables that are not only comfortable but also reflect these aesthetic values through the use of teak wood and Shou Sugi Ban finishing techniques. This technique was chosen because it is able to produce a unique texture, natural black color, and increase the overall durability of the material. Relaxation is achieved through the design of ergonomic furniture and the selection of materials and textures that give a natural impression visually and tactilely. The design approach integrates the principles of biophilic and emotional design by presenting a connection between humans and nature through texture patterns, organic materials, and a spatial atmosphere that is visually and sensorially soothing while supporting the emotional experience of users. Data was collected through interviews with business owners, observation of one of the kissaten spaces, and questionnaires to visitors to understand ergonomic needs and visual preferences. In the visual exploration stage, four alternative natural texture patterns namely pebble, wave, dune, and honeycomb were analyzed based on aesthetic criteria, visual relaxation effect, shape variation, and tactile sensation. The evaluation results showed that the wave pattern was chosen as the main pattern because it gives a calming rhythmic and organic effect. The design process was carried out in stages until prototyping and testing through usability testing. The results show that the designed furniture not only fulfills the aspects of physical comfort but also supports the experience of emotional relaxation, thus strengthening the identity of kissaten as a space that is calm, comfortable, and rich in natural aesthetic values.
