Abstract

The issue of organic waste and low-value plastic (LVP) in Indonesia is becoming increasingly urgent, marked by organic waste comprising 55.73% and plastic waste 17.3% of the total waste generated, while overall waste management remains below target. LVP is often considered to have low economic value due to its recycling difficulty, causing it to end up in landfills or pollute the environment. However, LVP has the potential to be repurposed into new structural materials through a circular economy approach. This design project aims to identify how LVP can support waste-sorting behavior and to develop a composting bin made primarily from LVP to enhance local waste processing. As a solution, this research proposes the design of a modular composting waste bin using recycled LVP material. The integrated design combines two main functions: waste separation (organic and inorganic) and on-site composting. The waste bin modules are designed to be flexible and adaptable to school environments, while the composting tank processes organic waste into fertilizer. Weather-resistant plastic material is chosen for durability and low cost, and educational elements such as waste type labels and unique compost facts are included to serve as environmental science learning tools for students. The design method includes surveys and observations of waste habits in schools, material experiments testing the physical properties of LVP (strength and durability), design analysis, as well as prototype development and testing. The final output is a modular composting bin product concept and prototype, featuring separated compartments and integrated educational elements. A trapezoid-shaped trash bin made of LVP material, accented with acrylic, featuring four modular waste categories, accompanied by a rotatable hexagonal tumbling composter. This product is expected to reduce mixed waste volume in schools while improving environmental literacy. Organic waste management through composting not only produces compost fertilizer and reduces waste but also engages students in contributing to their school’s environmental efforts. Thus, a composting bin made from recycled LVP has strong potential to support the reduction of mixed waste and strengthen environmental education.
