Abstract

This final project focuses on designing an outdoor dining furniture set consisting of a chair and table tailored for cafes located in heritage areas such as Retawu Deli in Malang. The design addresses the need for weather-resistant furniture that visually resembles wood while supporting the historical interior aesthetics of heritage buildings. To meet these challenges, recycled polypropylene plastic blocks were chosen as the primary material. These blocks were extruded and finished using a wire brushing technique to replicate the natural texture of Merbau wood. The design approach combines the principles of the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements. Structural aspects, such as the rectilinear form and joinery system, draw from Arts and Crafts to match the rigid nature of the material. In contrast, the butterfly-inspired curved backrest reflect the organic and symbolic characteristics of Art Nouveau, providing both aesthetic appeal and symbolic value. A knockdown construction system using JCBC bolts and embedded nuts enhances both assembly efficiency and production practicality. Ergonomic considerations were made based on SNI (Indonesian National Standard) measurements for dining furniture, ensuring optimal user comfort. Strength and durability were also validated through digital simulations that applied loads in accordance with national standards. The results show that the design successfully integrates functionality, aesthetics, and environmental responsibility while offering comfort and supporting the social dining experience in modern café environments.
