Abstract

The construction of Section 1 of the Jalan Lingkar Utara (JLU) Lamongan road project faces significant geotechnical challenges due to the presence of soft, compressible silty soil. To mitigate settlement and stability concerns, Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVDs) in combination with embankment preloading were implemented as the chosen ground improvement method. This final project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the PVDs installed in the project through a combination of theoretical design and field performance analysis. The study involves a comprehensive assessment of secondary data, including borehole logs, soil tests, and monitoring data, followed by the design of embankment geometry, soil settlement, and consolidation time—both with and without PVDs. Key parameters such as the coefficient of consolidation and soil stratification were derived from SPT results and laboratory data. The Asaoka method was used to interpret field settlement data and back-calculate the degree of consolidation. The results indicate that while the predicted settlements and time to reach 90% consolidation generally align with field observations, certain discrepancies suggest potential influences such as smear zones, installation quality, and soil variability. Overall, the implementation of PVDs significantly reduced the expected consolidation time and improved the performance of the embankment. This study not only evaluates the practical effectiveness of PVDs but also provides insights for improving future design methodologies for infrastructure projects built on soft ground.
