Abstract

The Taranaki Basin is one of New Zealand's main hydrocarbon-producing basins that is still in production today. One of the key formations in this basin is the Manutahi Sandstone reservoir in the Matemateaonga Formation, which was formed during the late Miocene to early Pliocene periods. Hydrocarbon reservoir characterization is necessary to determine the physical properties of the reservoir and to understand its distribution, thereby optimizing exploration and field development. Seismic inversion and multi-attribute approaches were applied to determine the acoustic impedance values of the reservoir and characterize other physical parameters such as porosity. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to separate lithologies based on acoustic impedance, density, and porosity values. The correlation between acoustic impedance and effective porosity values is quite good, at 0.818. The acoustic impedance values for the sandstone reservoir zone range from 6200 to 9000 ((m/s)*(g/cc)), with high porosity values of 0.18–0.27 v/v. The inversion method used is the acoustic impedance inversion method based on a soft constraint model with a correlation value of 0.9748 and an error of 0.2264. The prediction of effective porosity parameters using the multi-attribute method yielded a correlation value of 0.7076 and an error of 0.033 (v/v). The distribution of effective porosity values ranged from 0.10 to 0.25 (v/v). Meanwhile, the prediction of shale content parameters had a correlation of 0.8149 with an error of 0.1020, and the distribution of shale content values ranged from 0.10 to 0.50 (v/v). Additionally, new development well locations were identified based on the distribution maps of acoustic impedance, porosity, and shale content (vshale), specifically in the northern part of the study area, which exhibits a northwest–southeast-oriented distribution pattern.
