Abstract
Indonesia memiliki potensi nikel laterit terbesar di dunia. Seiring meningkatnya permintaan global terhadap feronikel, diperlukan pengolahan yang ramah lingkungan dan rendah emisi CO₂. Salah satu metode yang digunakan adalah reduksi bijih nikel laterit menggunakan gas NH₃, dilanjutkan dengan proses smelting pada Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Percobaan smelting pada produk hasil reduksi sebelumnya telah berhasil membentuk feronikel, namun untuk mendapatkan grade dan recovery yang optimal diperlukan penelitian lebih lanjut mengenai pengendalian waktu smelting. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis pengaruh waktu smelting dari produk reduksi bijih nikel laterit menggunakan gas NH3 menggunakan EAF terhadap kandungan Ni total dan recovery Ni dalam proses pembuatan feronikel. Smelting dilakukan dengan kuat arus 72 A dan tegangan 40 V serta variasi waktu yang digunakan adalah 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, dan 9 menit. Setelah proses smelting, produk yang dihasilkan akan ditimbang. Selanjutnya, dianalisis menggunakan X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), dan Scanning Electron Microscopy – Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) untuk mengetahui karakteristiknya secara lebih mendetail, kemudian dilakukan perhitungan recovery. Dari hasil penelitian yang telah dilakukan dapat diketahui bahwa variasi waktu dapat memengaruhi hasil smelting. Adapun hasil analisis variasi waktu dalam proses smelting menggunakan EAF terhadap bijih nikel laterit yang telah direduksi menggunakan NH3 dengan kandungan Fe tertinggi sebesar 87,06% pada variasi 5 menit dan kandungan Ni tertinggi sebesar 15,02% pada variasi 3 menit, serta perolehan recovery Fe dan Ni tertinggi secara berturut-turut sebesar 65,09% dan 91,41% pada variasi 5 menit.

Indonesia holds the largest lateritic nickel reserves in the world. With the increasing global demand for ferronickel, environmentally friendly and low CO₂ emission processing methods are needed. One such method involves reducing lateritic nickel ore using NH₃ gas, followed by a smelting process in an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). Previous smelting experiments on the reduced product have successfully produced ferronickel. However, to achieve optimal grade and recovery, further research is required, particularly regarding the control of smelting time. This study aims to analyze the effect of smelting time on total Ni content and Ni recovery during ferronickel production from NH₃-reduced lateritic nickel ore using EAF. Smelting was conducted using a current of 72 A and a voltage of 40 V, with time variations of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9 minutes. After smelting, the resulting product was weighed and analyzed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), and Scanning Electron Microscopy – Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) to determine its characteristics in detail. Recovery was then calculated. The results indicate that smelting time significantly influences the final product. The highest Fe content, 87.06%, was obtained at 5 minutes, while the highest Ni content, 15.02%, was observed at 3 minutes. The highest Fe and Ni recovery values, 65.09% and 91.41% respectively, were both achieved at 5 minutes of smelting.
