Abstract

This design project was motivated by the declining number of visitors to Pasar Baru Kertosono in the period of 2024–2025. The decline is attributed to an unstructured spatial layout and the absence of visual appeal within the market. Based on this issue, the research question was formulated as follows: how can an interior design with thematic zoning based on the urban cultural concept enhance spatial efficiency and visitor attraction in Pasar Baru Kertosono? The objective of this design is to classify market spaces based on their respective functions while applying an attractive and functional design approach to improve circulation flow and user comfort.
The design process adopted the design thinking method, which consists of six stages: understanding, empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, and literature studies, involving four key informants: the market manager, vendors, and two market visitors. The analysis results were used to generate a design concept, which was then refined through iterative testing and validation. The final design focused on two primary areas: the souvenir trading zone and the food court. The souvenir area features a ceiling design inspired by agrarian culture in a modern interpretation, along with the use of adjustable stalls to organize merchandise without additional storage. Navigation is facilitated by informative signage, and circulation follows a grid pattern to ensure comprehensive visitor exploration. In the food court area, local cultural elements are applied through ceiling treatments and suspended barrisol lighting. A traditional lesehan seating area is also provided to enhance the comfort of local visitors. The color palette uses neutral tones accented with red and green to reflect the existing identity, while the selected materials prioritize cleanliness and ease of maintenance. Safety features include CCTV, smoke detectors, and sprinklers throughout the redesigned areas.Design validation was carried out with 34 respondents using the Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) method, based on a Likert scale. The results indicate an average satisfaction score of 94.6%, categorized as very satisfied. This demonstrates that an interior design focusing on lighting optimization, functional zoning, spatial comfort, and visual identity enhancement can significantly improve user experience, foster interaction, and support hygiene within the market environment.
