Abstract

The utilization of coal as the main fuel in the NPK fertilizer industry makes a major contribution to carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, which negatively impact the environment and hinder the achievement of national decarbonization targets. To overcome this, this final project was carried out with the aim of evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of the strategy of switching coal to natural gas in the furnace unit in the NPK fertilizer production process. In the actual process, the furnace acts as a heat provider for rotary dryers with an open combustion system that uses coal directly. As the demands for efficiency and sustainability increase, an evaluation of fuel switching options to natural gas fuel is being evaluated. This final project re-simulates the actual combustion process in the furnace using the Aspen Plus V14 software. For coal, a sequential reactor approach (RYield–RStoic– RCSTR) is used to represent the stages of decomposition, pyrolysis, and combustion. As for natural gas, combustion is simulated directly through RCSTR because of its nature as a gaseous fuel. Evaluation was carried out on thermal performance, CO₂ emissions, and economic indicators including Capital Expenditure (CapEx), Operational Expenditure (OpEx), Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and Payback Period (PP).
