Abstract
==================================================================================================================================
Cherax quadricarinatus, commonly known as the "Red Claw" freshwater crayfish, is a high-value aquaculture species cultivated both for consumption and as an ornamental animal. One of the main challenges in breeding this species is the prolonged duration of natural egg incubation. To address this issue, artificial incubation techniques combined with LED light particularly the hortisolis type, are being utilized due to their high energy efficiency, low heat emission, and flexible spectral control. This study aimed to examine the effects of hortisolis LED light photoperiods on the embryonic development of C. quadricarinatus, focusing on morphology, development rate, survival rate, and abnormalities at different developmental stages. The treatments applied included photoperiods of 8L:16D (P1), 12L:12D (P2), and 0L:24D (P0), with a constant light intensity of 1500 lux. Observations began from the early cleavage stage (blastula). The results showed that differences in photoperiod did not disrupt the normal stages of embryonic development. However, the exposure to hortisolis light photoperiods tended to slow down the rate of development. This was evident in the final developmental stages observed: embryos in P1 reached post-embryo I (2 embryos) and post-embryo II (3 embryos), while in P2, all embryos remained at post-embryo I. In contrast, embryos in P0 reached the more advanced post-embryo II stage. Survival rates in P1 (96%) and P2 (92%) were slightly lower compared to P0 (100%). Morphological and locomotor abnormalities were observed in both P1 and P2 treatments (4.16%) but were absent in the P0 group. In conclusion, exposure to hortisolis LED light with varying photoperiods negatively affected the rate of embryonic development in C. quadricarinatus by slowing its progression. However, it did not adversely affect embryo morphology or prove toxic or lethal, as survival rates remained above 80%.
