Abstract

Indonesia, as the third-largest banana producer in the world, generates an abundance of banana sheath waste that remains largely underutilized. This study aims to design a sustainable home decor product set made from banana sheath, tailored for natural-vintage-themed café interiors. The design process adopts a design thinking approach through several stages: observation, interviews, and questionnaires to explore user needs; followed by ideation through sketches and 3D models; prototyping; and usability testing. The design concept is based on four key principles: flexibility (modular and reconfigurable components), natural aesthetics (authentic textures and earthy tones), harmony (visual balance with interior elements), and sustainability (use of biomaterials, low-emission production, and recyclable packaging). The product output consists of a home decor set that includes a pendant lamp, wall lamp, standing lamp, and multifunctional display rack. The design was developed in collaboration with local MSMEs to support economic empowerment and efficient production using regional resources. Key features include a knock-down system, customizable lamp covers, and environmentally friendly materials. This product not only strengthens the visual identity of café spaces but also enhances social, environmental, and economic values through a sustainable design approach.
