Abstract

Microplastics are plastic particles ranging in size from 1 µm to 5000 µm. One aquatic organism that is directly impacted by the accumulation of microplastics is Crustacea. Crustaceans, such as shrimp, are aquatic biota that have various feeding methods including scavenging, filter feeding, and deposit feeding, making them more vulnerable to accumulating microplastics because their food items are relatively similar in size to microplastics. If microplastics accumulated in shrimp transfer to higher trophic levels, such as humans, this could pose potential health risks. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate the estimated daily intake (EDI) by identifying the physical characteristics of microplastics in vaname shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and to determine the polymer characteristics of microplastics in vaname shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). The data analysis used is quantitative descriptive analysis by examining the physical characteristics of microplastics such as shape, size, and color. Meanwhile, the polymer characteristics of microplastics were identified using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, along with the calculation of estimated daily intake (EDI) to estimate daily human consumption. The average abundance of microplastics was 131.8 particles per individual in the cephalothorax, 109.2 particles per individual in the abdomen, and 35.1 particles per individual in the caudal region. The dominant physical characteristics of microplastics found in the cephalothorax, abdomen, and caudal regions were fragment shapes, blue color, and sizes ranging from 10 to 50 μm. The types of polymers identified were polyamide (PA), polyurethane (PU), and cellophane or cellulose. The estimated daily intake (EDI) values were 37,26 particles/person/day for the cephalothorax, 20,39 particles/person/day for the abdomen, 159,53 particles/person/day for the caudal region, and 29,9 particles/person/day for the whole body.
