Abstract

Microalgal consortium refers to the interaction between two or more microalgae species that coexist and may engage in symbiosis for specific purposes. This study aimed to evaluate the capability of a consortium of Chlorella vulgaris and Spirulina platensis in the application of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology by observing the photosynthetic rate, carbon fixation rate, and CO₂ absorption efficiency. The consortium was cultivated in Walne medium modified with the addition of 30 ppm NPK fertilizer, using variations in culture ratios (0:1, 1:0, 1:1, 2:1, and 1:2) and two CO₂ flow rates (30 mL/s and 60 mL/s). Statistical analysis revealed that the consortium ratio had a significant effect (p ≤ 0.05) on CO₂ absorption efficiency and photosynthetic rate. Meanwhile, flow rate showed a significant effect (p ≤ 0.05) only on the CO₂ fixation rate. The CO₂ absorption efficiency exhibited a strong positive correlation with the photosynthetic rate (r = 0.8), while the carbon fixation rate showed a very weak correlation with absorption efficiency (r = 0.1). Additionally, the photosynthetic rate had a weak negative correlation (r = –0.4) with the carbon fixation rateTreatment P6 (consortium ratio 1:1 with CO₂ flow rate of 60 mL/s) showed the highest CO₂ fixation rate at 7976 mg/L/hour. Treatment P4 (consortium ratio 0:1, 60 mL/s) exhibited the highest CO₂ absorption efficiency at 1023%, while treatment P3 (consortium ratio 0:1, 30 mL/s) showed the highest photosynthetic rate at 6.53 g/L/day. Morphological observations indicated that C. vulgaris did not undergo any noticeable changes in cell structure, whereas S. platensis experienced a morphological transformation from a spiral to a linear form.
