Abstract

Well water is often the main source of clean water for the community, but the high content of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) in it can cause serious health problems such as gastrointestinal disorders, hemosiderosis, and neurotoxicity. In this final project, a monitoring system for Fe and Mn levels based on the spectrophotometric method was designed using LEDs with wavelengths of 510 nm for Fe and 525 nm for Mn, as well as a TCS34725 sensor connected to an ESP32 microcontroller. The developed monitoring system showed an accuracy of 95.65% and a precision of 0.922 for Fe, and an accuracy of 82.61% and a precision of 0.998 for Mn, with linearity values both above 0.99, indicating a highly linear relationship between actual concentrations and sensor readings. In addition, a well water filtration system using a combination of silica, zeolite and activated carbon media was also successfully designed and tested. The test results showed that the ratio of 45% silica, 33% zeolite, and 22% activated carbon had the highest reduction effectiveness, which was 93.88% for Fe and 99.72% for Mn, with a total effectiveness of 96.80%. These results prove that the designed filtration system is able to reduce heavy metal levels close to the water quality standards.
