Abstract

The LSW Office and IPH Schools Playgroup projects illustrate two different architectural approaches that share similar goals in addressing functional requirements, contextual responsiveness, and user needs. The application of the 13 architectural competency standards established by the Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI) is a crucial aspect to ensure the quality and sustainability of each project. Designed as an office building in Kediri, LSW Office adopts a formal, efficient, and representative design strategy that reflects a professional identity while also responding to the tropical climate and optimizing natural lighting. Meanwhile, IPH Schools Playgroup is conceived with a child-centered design, prioritizing safety, spatial proportions aligned with children’s scale, and adaptable areas for play and learn. Key design considerations in the project include spatial scale, color selection, daylight access, comfort, and security. Both projects exemplify how architecture can effectively address spatial and functional challenges, encourage positive interaction between people and built environments, support sustainable development, and harmonize with social and environmental contexts. This study highlights the importance of the architect’s ability to shape space through the analysis of user needs, design standards, ethical and aesthetic considerations to create environments that are both functional and meaningful.
