Abstract

Molasses is a highly viscous by-product of the sugar industry at PT. Rejoso Manis Indo (RMI) that requires a reliable pumping system. The existing centrifugal pump used to distribute molasses from the W-Molasses to the W1-Molasses tank exhibits suboptimal performance and fails to meet the expected flow rate. Therefore, a redesign of the pump system is necessary to improve production effectiveness. The stages in this final project include the analytical calculation of the effective installation head, which is validated by numerical calculation using Pipe Flow Expert software, pump performance correction for viscous fluids, selection of a suitable centrifugal pump, and the detailed design of the impeller and volute components. The results from the calculation, based on an effective installation head (Heff) of 52,971 m and a capacity of 77 m³/h, yielded an equivalent water head of 52.19 m after viscosity correction and adding the safety factor. The selected centrifugal pump is a Grundfos NBG/NKG 80-50-200/219 with an efficiency of 78,4% and a speed of 2900 rpm. The corresponding impeller design is a moderate specific speed impeller, semi-open type, with an inlet diameter of 0.110 m and outlet diameter of 0.218 m, an inlet blade angle of 17°, an outlet blade angle of 25°, and a total of 8 blades. Specifies a key with a length of 20 mm, width of 8,8 mm, and height of 4,4 mm, and recommends an SKF 6407 bearing with a service life of 2,7 years.
