Abstract

Indonesia is a nation abundant in natural resources, one of which is tobacco. Based on the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey, there are approximately 70 million active smokers, with 7.4% of them being adolescents between the ages of 10 and 18. Without substantial intervention, projections from Bappenas estimate that the number of adolescent smokers could rise to 6 million by the year 2030. This alarming trend underscores the urgent need for educational media that is specifically tailored to adolescent characteristics. This study focuses on the development of educational media in the form of digital comics presented through the Webtoon platform, aiming to raise awareness about the harmful effects of smoking among adolescents while incorporating sensitivity toward potentially triggering content. The research employed various methods, including literature reviews, analysis of existing works, comparative studies, in-depth interviews with experts, and the distribution of questionnaires targeting adolescents aged 11 to 15. The outcome of the design process resulted in five episodes of a digital comic entitled Hazard Addiction, presented in a vertical scroll format. Evaluation through pre-test and post-test assessments involving 57 adolescent respondents revealed a significant increase in awareness regarding the dangers of smoking, with average scores rising from 75.07 to 92.5. These findings suggest that digital comics in a Webtoon format can function as an effective and engaging educational medium, well-suited to the visual preferences and psychological needs of adolescents.
